Collar Terminology

Dog collars can be highly customizable down to the smallest of details. Below we have provided some basic terminology to help when ordering your collar!

Collar Size

This is one of the most crucial components of your order. Pricing is based on the width and length of your design. Ordering the wrong size may result in the collar not fitting properly- too small/too big. Make sure to read our instructions on "What collar size do I need to order?" to get an idea for how to measure for the variety of collars we offer.

Top strip, design panel

This refers to the top layer (if you are ordering a double-layered collar), or the entire collar if it is a single-layer.

Base, bottom strip

If you'd like your collar to be double-layered there is an added cost. This option provides the design of the collar on a top strip that will be securely attached to the base. This option also allows for a border to be added, if desired (also an added cost). We offer a variety of options for the base layer including the base being the same width as your top strip, just a tad bit wider so it peeks over the edge, or wide enough to include a border in your design. Border widths will vary based on based on what you would like to include.

Tapering, taper

Tapering occurs when you want your collar base or design panel to be wider than the buckle option chosen. As a standard, we typically use 1" buckles for dog collars and 1/2" buckles for cat collars. If you would like to use a bigger sized buckle we can definitely accommodate you, but it is important to keep in mind that buckles do not come in all sizes (nothing past 2"), and this will add an extra cost onto your collar.

Bordering

This is an add-on option to your collar and will cost extra. Bordering can be done in spots, crystals, or a combination of both. Bordering can be customized in a number of ways; our standard is to border loosely around the collar in round spots. Adding crystals or tight bordering will increase the cost of this add-on option.

Crystals

As a standard we use Swarovski flat back crystals. They come in a variety of colors and sizes. However, not all colors are available in the sizes we use for collars. If you know what crystal colors you want to use, or you have a general idea of colors you can include this in your order notes. This would also be the place to list, for example, if you want your crystals to have an ombre' effect, a fire theme, various shades of green chosen by the maker, etc. I will reach out and provide options in the form of a digital mock-up or in-person mock-up based on what crystals I have on hand. Crystal colors must be finalized by the purchaser before work can begin on your collar. View our crystal options here.

*Please note: Swarovski is in the process of a worldwide realignment of their business model shifting their focus to the luxury market segment. As part of their new strategic direction, Swarovski will limit the distribution and supply of crystal components to a few branding partners. This is a global transition and will affect all Swarovski re-sellers and distributors. The phase out will occur over several months through 2021. We will continue to use and purchase Swarovski crystals when able, but we may be making the switch to other crystal lines such as Preciosa (who has been expanding their selection of colors), Alora, and Spark crystals.

Shaped spots, Conchos

Shaped spots, conchos, or other embellishments are included in some of our collar designs. We can omit, replace, or include these embellishments on your collar if requested. You can view all our shaped spots and conchos available here. I try to keep this page updated based on what I have on hand. Occasionally I may have low stock and suppliers may sell out, or backorder certain options. If this happens with any embellishments on your collar I will communicate with you regarding next steps.

Hardware

All hardware used by Posh Peach Collars is top quality. We carry solid brass (gold), nickel-plated solid brass (silver), and we even offer stainless steel hardware, copper, and gold-plated hardware for an added cost, if requested. You can view our hardware options here.

Hardware on most collars will include a buckle, d-ring, strap keeper, and chicago screws. Tag collars include only an O-ring and chicago screws. Cat collars and smaller width collars will not include a strap keeper.

Leather

I try to keep my leather options updated as I order new colors and brands. Typically, dog collars (depending on the design) will use Latigo or Bridle leather in 9/10oz weight. This is heavy duty and can become quite thick if you are creating a double layered collar where both the base layer and top strip are the same weight. Some designs can only be made on lightweight leather depending on the spots used and leather color you choose. Cat collars are typically made with lightweight leather 6/7oz, unless otherwise requested. When designing your collar we will nail down these specification in the design process. Some leather colors and brands can be very popular and may sell out quickly from our suppliers or are only available in certain lengths and weights. You can take a look at all our leather colors here.
